Sun Yang takes gold in 400m freestyle at World Championships

July 29th, at the 2013 FINA World Swimming Championships held in Barcelona, Spain, Chinese famous athlete Sun Yang won his first gold medal in the men's 400m freestyle in an impressive time of 3:41.59. This is also the first gold medal for Chinese swimming team at this world championships. Another Chinese competitor who also took part in 400m freestyle got eighth place in a time of 3:48.88. Japan's swimmer Kosuke Hagino finished the match to win the silver medal in 3:44.82. America's swimmer Connor Jaeger held on for the bronze in 3:44.85.

Sun Yang has won quite a lot of gold medals. He has a glorious swimming career. Sun Yang's international breakthrough happened at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In that year, he was just 16 years old. Though Sun Yang placed 28th in the 400m freestyle, unable to reach the final, Sun Yang's potential broke out at the following year at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. He won his first international medal with a bronze in the 1500 freestyle.

At 2010 Asian Games, Sun Yang's lucky games came finally. There, he won two gold medals in the 1500 freestyle, 4x200 freestyle relay, and two silver medals in the 200 and 400 freestyle.

At 2011 World Aquatics Championships, Sun Yang won win his first World Championship title in the 800 freestyle with a time of 7:38.57. Sun also competed in the 1500 freestyle and broke Grant Hackett's ten-year-old world record in 14:34.14, compared to Hackett's 14:34.56.

At 2012 Summer Olympics, in the 400m freestyle, Sun Yang won in a time 3:40.14, becoming the first Chinese male swimmer to win a gold medal at the Olympics. In addition, he won the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle in a time of 14:31.02, a new world record by over 3 seconds, and over 8 seconds ahead of second place finisher Ryan Cochrane.
