Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to fall faster than expected in the Chinese box office, hinting signs that the global box office hit may not turn out to be a huge hit as it may seem.  Despite its heavy marketing, which even included hiring Lu Han as China's Star Wars ambassador, the film does not look like it will be a big hit in the country.

The seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise is expected to surpass the $2.186 billion that Titanic grossed.  In China, however, the film's luster is quickly fading after it grossed $33 million on its opening day on Saturday. The figure dropped by 35% to $20.7m on Sunday and further by 65% on Monday, grossing a paltry $7.2m. By Tuesday, it only earned $6m gross making a total $66m four-day revenue.

The Force Awakens' debut was the biggest weekend opening of all time in China, but that was expected because no other mega flick opened on a Saturday. China Film Insider notes that younger-generation moviegoers are not really keen on watching it. Current projections peg Star Wars to earn roughly $150m on its theatrical run.

That would place it higher than Spectre ($83m), Terminator Genisys ($112m), The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies ($121m), Iron Man 3 ($121m), and Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation ($136m), but less than what Dark of the Moon ($165m), Avatar ($209m), Jurassic World ($228m), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($240m), Transformers: Age of Extinction ($320m), and Furious 7 ($390m) earned. So far, Paul Walker's swansong remains the highest grossing Hollywood movie in China.
