China's latest women's tennis sensation Zhang Shuai was defeated by Britain's Chinese-killer Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open, 6-4, 6-1, held at the Rod Laver Arena of the Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Tianjin, China native's defeat marks the exit of all Chinese Women's Singles tennis participants in the said grand slam tournament. Xu Yi-Fan and Zheng Saisai are still set to compete in the Women's Doubles semifinals scheduled on Wednesday afternoon at the park's Show Court 2.

Zhang, who the Telegraph notes as "playing far above her world ranking of No. 133", has conquered world no. 2 Simona Halep of Romania in the first round and trounced heavy-hitter Madison Keys of the USA during the fourth round to set up the quarterfinal tiff with Konta.

Meanwhile, Konta has beaten Zhang's compatriot Zheng in the second round while also thrashing world. 23 Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in the fourth round to enter the final eight.

However, the 24-year-old Briton's most impressive win of the competitions so far is her opening round victory over world no. 10 Venus Williams, who was seeded eighth in the tournament.

It took a lot of aggressiveness in the part of Konta to beat Zhang in their matchup on Wednesday as the latter showed a lot of toughness especially on defense.

Konta's assertive serving game carried her through, though, especially during the first set when she successfully finished it at 6-4, quenching Zhang's attempt of a dramatic comeback that would have given the Chinese a lot of momentum going into the second set.

The Sydney, Australia-born Konta broke Zhang in the first game of the second set, but the qualifier broke her back to make it 1-1.

From then on, it was all Konta as Zhang showed fatigue, having weaker power on her first serves, after seven straight victories in the grand slam event.

It was a brave fight for Zhang, who reportedly had almost retired before this season because of years of failure during grand slam tournaments.
