This is also Sun Yang's second consecutive gold medal in the same competition event. At the last 2011 FINA World Championships held in Shanghai, Sun Yang won the first place in men's 800-meter freestyle as well.

In today's swim meet, Sun Yang's winning time was 7:41.36. Sun Yang's tactical manoeuvre is to be the bellwether from the very beginning of the race. Sun Yang led the race at the first turn and he maintained a 0.08-second lead over Tunisia's famous swimmer in the first 50 meters. By 100 meters, Australia's Jordan Harrison came into the second place, but he was still behind Sun Yang by 0.53 second.

By 250 meters, Canada's Ryan Cochrane became the No. 2, behind Sun Yang with a 0.33-second margin. Sun Yang looked comfortable throughout the swim meet as he swam ahead of other swimmers all the time. By 550 meters, America's McbBroom had also raced up and was in second, just 0.51 second behind the Chinese swimmer, before Sun Yang began to stretch his lead with around 150 meters remaining. By 600 meters, Sun Yang had pushed his lead to 0.6 second.

By 650 meters, suddenly, Sun Yang began to accelerate, and got rid of the chases from other swimmers at once. In the final stretch, Sun Yang swam in front of other competitors and won the race without doubt.

America's Michael McBroom took the silver, 2.24 seconds behind Sun. And Canada's Ryan Cochrane won a bronze in 7:43.70.
