Tripe Crown: China’s Sun Yang won third gold medal at world swimming championships

Beijing -- August 5th, at the 2013 FINA World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, Spain, China's Sun Yang won the men's 1500 meters freestyle in a time of 14 minutes, 41.15 seconds. This is Sun Yang's third gold medal at the 2013 world swimming championships. The Chinese gifted athlete completed a sweep of the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events after gaining today's gold.

Canadian swimmer Ryan Cochrane took the silver medal in 14:42.48. In the race, Cochrane kept pace with Sun Yang closely most of the way. By 450m, Cochrane was 0.05 second ahead of Sun Yang. By 500m, Cochrane was 0.03 second ahead. By 550m, Cochrane was 0.01 second ahead. By 600m, Cochrane was pulling away a margin of 0.05 second with Sun Yang. Later, Ryan Cochrane burst out his strength. By 700m, the gap between Cochrane and Sun Yang had widened to 0.17 second.

By 1100m, Sun Yang began to speed up. By 1300m, the margin between Sun Yang and Cochrane had shortened to 0.01 second. By 1400m, Sun Yang finally turned the situation on the last two laps and shook off Cochrane. Then the Chinese superstar won going away in 14:41.15 seconds.

Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri won the bronze medal with a time of 14:45.37. America's Connor Jaeger and Michael McBroom finished the race in fourth and fifth.

After the game, Sun Yang told journalists: "I really appreciated my opponent Ryan Cochrane. If he didn't chase me closely, I wouldn't have been able to make it. After all the laps I felt a little fatigued. But I still tried to convince myself to stay with him because I knew I had an advantage in the last 100 meters."
