Badminton News: Wang Yihan Sets Swiss Open Finals Showdown With He Bingjao

Current world No. 7 and tournament's third-seed Wang Yihan of China defeated Indian star and sixth-ranked Saina Nehwal in two straight sets in their semifinal match of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Swiss Open to advance to the final round of the competition at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel Saturday.

Wang, a 2012 London Olympics silver medalist and a world champion in 2011, stormed the 2015 world championship silver medalist in the opening set 21-11 and claimed the much tighter second set 21-19 wrapping the match in just 40 minutes.

With the win, the 28-year-old Shanghai-born professional badminton player continued her dominance over the 26-year-old Nehwal, who reaches her career-high singles ranking of world No. 1 on October 15, 2015.

Wang, the 2009 Swiss Open winner, is just one match away from reclaiming the title which is a part of the BWF Grand Prix Gold series. She will be facing her compatriot He Bingjiao in the final stage of the Switzerland-based annual badminton event.

He, 19, is ranked the world No. 20 and she has already garnered 43801 points in nine tournaments she has competed. She defeated fellow Chinese and current world No. 12 Sun Yu, who was the fifth-seeded player of the competition, in 21-15, 21-19 straight sets victory.

Wang and He faced each other in the recently concluded All England Badminton Championship, wherein the former 2012 world No.1 Wang beat He in straight sets.

In the other semifinal matches, Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei ousted the 13th seed H.S. Prannoy of India.

The 21-year-old Wang, who was ranking 52nd in the world, continued his spectacular winning-run with a 12-21, 21-14, 23-21 victory over the 24-year-old world No. 27.

The Chinese Taipei national will be facing the German Marc Zwiebler, who currently holds the 19th spot in world rankings, in the final round. The 32-year-old Zwiebler beat Henri Hurskainer of Sweden, 21-11, 10-21, 21-15 in their semifinal encounter.
