Doctors have since reported the comedy icon was upgraded to stable condition.

Rivers was believed to have been undergoing a treatment on her vocal cords.

As the crisis unfolded, TMZ.com reported hospital staff as saying, "We're told an emergency call was placed to 911 at 9:39 AM ET and the caller said, "We have somebody in either cardiac or respiratory arrest." The time was at 8:15 AM this morning.

While known for her wildly caustic comedy, and plummy voice, Rivers is also a fashion commentator and recently conducted a 90-minute episode of "Fashion Police" MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Sunday and the Emmy Awards on Monday.

She had not released any information pertaining to her health at the time.

The report comes as the entertainment world is still reel from the suicide of funny man Robin Williams, who committed suicide after suffering from depression and the early stages of Parkinson's Disease.

Born on June 8, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York. According to Bio.com, Joan Rivers's big break came in 1965: a booking on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. She became an instant hit, and her first syndicated talk show on daytime television, "That Show" with Joan Rivers, combined with appearances on Carson and The Ed Sullivan Show, made Rivers a household name.

Rivers published her 11th book, I Hate Everyone...Starting With Me, in 2012. Despite her age, she is still very much known for her live comedy shows. Along with her entertaiment ventures, she is also known as a vocal supporter for LGBTQ equality.
