Harmon won the hearts of Idol judges Urban, Harry Connick Jr., and Jennifer Lopez during his audition in Arkansas when he sang Allen Stone's Unaware. He has been a constantly great performer until his win on April 7. Lopez has always expressed his admiration for the young man saying Trent always has a "privileged voice" and that he has the power to tell stories whenever he sings.

While waiting for the grand winner to be announced, Harmon and Renae were holding hands tightly and at the very moment his name was mentioned, they hugged emotionally with Harmon saying that he worked so hard for the win and that it was Renae who pushed him to do it.

The season finale was not only dedicated to Harmon's glorious winning moment, but also included a throwback occasion which showcased the reunion and performances of former American Idol finalists and winners such as Kelly Clarkson, Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen, Fantasia, Philip Philips, Constantine Maroulis, Jennifer Hudson, and LaToya London. Surprise guests were also there to grace the show as Brian Dunkleman, General Larry Platt, William Hung, Simon Cowell, and President Barrack Obama.

American Idol Season 1 premiered in June of 2002. The show ran for almost 14 years.
