The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly retaining head coach Byron Scott for next season as the team waits for former icon Phil Jackson to resign from his New York Knicks post and return to LA in 2017.

Finally, the Lakers' season is over. Kobe Bryant went out into the proverbial Los Angeles sunset by dropping 60 points in a Lakers win in what is said to be the worst season in franchise history. The farewell tour is over, the drama is over, and now what's next for Coach Scott and the once mighty franchise?

CBS Sports' Ken Berger reported that Scott has a "major chance" to remain as Lakers head coach next season as team president Jeanie Buss is "pushing for Scott behind the scenes".

Berger continued that Scott's stay "could clear the way for a top-to-bottom reset for the franchise in 2017, and the possible return of Jackson to run basketball operations with Luke Walton as the coach".

While all are wild speculations for sure, one can also see its possibility since Phil Jackson has an opt out clause in his contract with the Knicks at the end of the 2016-2017 season.

Perhaps the most criticized head coach in the NBA this season is the 55-year-old Scott, not only by several basketball experts but also the Lakers fans as well.

Lakers Nation's Corey Hansford indicated that "whether it is his basketball strategy on the court or some of his comments off of it, Scott hasn't endeared himself to Lakers fans this season and many believe he should be fired once the season ends".

However, with this latest reports, it looks like Scott will be in LA to stay and it would also most likely mean that the franchise and its fans might experience "more years outside of the playoffs", as Hansford said, before the second winningest ballclub in NBA history goes back to its lofty porch.
