Children are no longer allowed to participate in reality shows, according to a circular issued by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television (SAPPRFT).

The release said that reality shows with kids and minors should be "strictly controlled" to ensure the children's well-being. The announcement has prompted TV stations to cancel reality shows that star celebrities and their kids such as "Where Are We Going, Dad?" and "Dad Is Back."

The SAPPRFT previously limited the participation of minors in reality shows in July last year for ethical reasons.

"In a few reality shows, we have seen the commercialization and adultification of minors. This must be addressed," the SAPPRFT said in the July statement.

When reality shows starring children went big, starting with "Where Are We Going, Dad?" in 2013, brands have been signing the kids on to endorse different products. This potentially hinders the kids' time to "just be kids."

The parents themselves are not stopping their children as the amount of money they get from endorsements and talent fees increase after the kids' debut.

According to SAPPRFT, more than 100 variety shows were broadcasted on nationwide TV, many of which were reality shows that stars children. These generate more than 10 billion yuan ($1.55 billion) in advertising revenue.

In September 2015, China amended its law on advertisement, banning minors under the age of 10 as spokespeople or endorsers of any kind of products.

Psychologists lauded the government's latest move.
