U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle considers 2016 as the "year of the outsider" during his interview in CNBC Thursday.

He also predicted Donald Trump would beat Hillary Clinton.

Quayle, who was vice president during the term of President George H.W. Bush, is backing presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

"He knows how to win," Quayle said in a "Squawk Box" interview, citing the fact that Trump already "knocked off 16 Republican" even if a lot of them "would have been good presidents."

Trump met with House Speaker Paul Ryan at the GOP headquarters in Washington on Thursday. Ryan earlier said that he cannot support the billionaire-turned-presidential aspirant.

Trumps meeting with Ryan aimed at unifying the Republican Party.

Quayle believed, however, that Trump won't "get into Paul Ryan's head," although he thought the speaker was still thinking things over after his remarks now that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is has missed his chances of becoming the Republican nominee .

"[Trump] is going to find out as he starts to go around Capitol Hill, folks in Congress, they need a lot of stroking. You got to be nice. He can be nice when people are nice to him," Quayle said.

Quayle also believes that Trump will really have to deal with Ryan if he becomes the president.

The former VP also likened being the president into running a business.

"In business, you try to get a deal, it doesn't work out; guess what, you just go onto the next deal," he explained. On the other hand, if Trump becomes the president, if he doesn't "get a deal, you go on to the next deal but you're dealing with the same people."

Quayle also predicts that either Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida or Ohio Gov. John Kasich, both former GOP presidential contenders, will be Trump's running mate. However, his bet goes to Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, although he is "not on too many people's lists."

Quayle praises Portman for his impeccable background: "congressman, trade representative, OMB director, U.S. senator - he's got it all," he said.
