The 1986 action-drama film 'Top Gun' celebrated its 30th anniversary on May 16, 2016. The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott, younger brother of acclaimed director Ridley Scott.

Tom Cruise broke into the film industry with his role in the movie. He played the iconic LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a US Navy Pilot, known for his reckless flying style as well as troubled nature following the death of his father in the Vietnam War.

Cruise starred alongside Val Kilmer as LT Tom "Iceman" Kazanski, Anthony Edwards as  LTJG Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, Tom Skerritt as CDR Mike "Viper" Metcalf, Tim Robins as LTJG Samuel "Merlin" Wells, Kelly McGillis as Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood and Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw.

'Top Gun' opened in U.S. theaters in May 1986 and went on to become the highest-grossing film of that year.

Although critics gave the film mixed reviews, it managed to snag multiple accolades including one Academy Award and one Golden Globe for the track "Take My Breath Away" by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock. It also won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture.

Bruckheimer co-produced the original 1986 film together with Don Simpson. He is returning to work on the planned sequel with Cruise, who is also reprising his role as Maverick. According to USA Today, Bruckheimer believes that the film's popularity stems from its time-enduring, beloved characters - specifically Maverick.

"If the movie was just about speed and great dialogue, but you didn't care about the characters, we wouldn't be talking about it right now... It's the wish fulfillment, overcoming your demons to triumph in the end, that we all strive for," he said.

Bruckheimer revealed that he was working on 'Top Gun 2' with Cruise after a tweeting a photograph with the lead actor back in January. "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2," he captioned the image.

"It's something that if we get the script right, and Tom loves it, we'll be off very shortly," Bruckheimer added. It remains unknown whether other original cast members will be joining Cruise for the second time.

'Top Gun 2' is an upcoming action-drama film intended as a sequel to the original 1986 film. Its predecessor grossed a $356 million at the box office upon its release and catapulted Cruise to international stardom.
