Scientists just captured some of the most incredible lightning strike footage courtesy of a new high speed camera.

This lightning video was taken by researchers from Florida Institute of Technology during the afternoons of May 19 and May 20 by a ultra high speed advanced camera that took shots of storms as thunderstorms came rolling through, revealed Ningyu Liu, who is a physics and space sciences professor at Florida Tech.

Liu estimated that that these powerful lightning strikes are from a distance of about six miles away from the campus grounds. Liu also works with a team along with fellow professor Hamid Rassoul and students as well, where the researchers turn on the camera every time there is a storm brewing on the northern direction from their window.

This special camera is crucial for obtaining this amazing footage as researchers were able to acquire this highly advanced camera equipment and also a expensive one at that, when they were granted US $456,000 from the National Space Foundation. This expensive camera can shoot 7,000 frames per second and also possesses a playback video speed of 700 FPS.

Liu and the team are now focusing their studies by continuing to use this special camera when the summer season arrives, since this is a time when lightning strikes are most prevalent, opening to more chances for study. He adds, these thunderstorms are so frequent that we just let the camera on while it records and captures interesting footage of this natural phenomena.

The team hopes that by obtaining this rare footage, this would be valuable to further advance their research regarding lightning physics, by analyzing these amazing videos. He adds that this experiment will continue into the entire summer, as the team will increase the recording frame rate of the camera, to capture more detailed videos and interesting cases as well.
