After a week-long trial, a jury including six men and six women deliberated for approximately two hours before finding Michael guilty of the killing, which carries a potential sentence of 40 years to life in state prison.

Michael's lawyers argued that he should be convicted of voluntary manslaughter since the murder was not premeditated. However, the prosecutors maintained that the shooting was planned and the actor shot his wife because he was angry.

The actor, who played the role of a police officer on the FX series, was upset that his wife wanted a divorce and belived that she was having an affair with someone else, Deputy District Attorney Tannaz Mokayef told jurors in the opening statements.

On May 19, 2014, Michael waited for April to come home and once she arrived, he shot her once in the back and then twice in the legs in front of their children, aged 8 and 6 at the time. He then called 911 and told the operator that he had shot his wife, according to court evidence.

The actor told detectives that he had originally planned to commit suicide but could not go through with it and therefore decided to shoot his wife instead with the intention to cause pain.

"I was just angry," Michael told investigators, according to transcripts released on Thursday. "All I intended to do was shoot her in the leg. And then I shot her in the leg and that was it."

The actor, who has also made appearances in films like Boogie Nights, Planet of the Apes and Forrest Gump, turned himself in after the incident and has remained in custody since. His sentencing hearing has been scheduled for June 10.
