Janet Waldo: Voice of Judy Jetson and Penelope Pitstop, Dies at 96

(Photo : Wikipedia) Janet Waldo, the animation actress behind such iconic cartoon characters as the Judy Jetson, the fashionable teenage daughter of George Jetson in the space-era cartoon, The Jetsons.


Janet Waldo, the voiceover artist behind the iconic cartoon character Judy Jetson from the space-era cartoon, The Jetsons, passed away on Sunday at her home in Encino. She was 96.


Waldo's death was confirmed by her daughter Lucy Lee, who said that she had been suffering from benign brain tumor since 2011 and was bed-ridden since her diagnosis.

Waldo's extensive career as a voiceover actress saw her give life to many unforgettable characters during her career, which spanned from 1938 to 2000.

Apart from voicing Judy Jetson in the Hanna-Barbera production, she also lent her voice to other animated characters including guitarist Josie McCoy on Josie and the Pussycats, imperiled heiress-in-distress Penelope Pitstop on Wacky Races andThe Perils of Penelope Pitstop, Granny Sweet on the The Atom Ant Show's Precious Pop segment, Morticia Addams on The Addams Family, and many more.

Waldo attended the University of Washington when she was introduced to Bing Crosby after she won an award for a theatre performance.

Waldo was signed as a contract talent for Paramount Pictures after receiving a screen test thanks to a Paramount Pictures talent scout who accompanied Crosby at the time. She had a rather unforgettable movie career at first, but eventually became a lead actress in three Westerns, costarring with Tim Holt in The Bandit Trail (1941) and Land of the Open Range (1942).

However, It was in Cecil B. De Mille's Lux Radio Theatre where she made her breakthrough, lending her voice to many programs, including Edward G. Robinson's Big Town, Meet Corliss Archer, Battle of the Planets, among others.

She also tried her hand at television and her TV credits included roles in I Love Lucy, The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet and The Andy Griffith Show.

Waldo tied the knot to late playwright Robert Edwin Lee (Inherit the Wind, Auntie Mame).

She is survived by her daughter Lucy and son Jonathan.
