China and Sweden went on to finish their match with a scoreless draw as both sides progressed to the quarterfinal round of the Olympic women's soccer tournament at the ongoing 2016 Rio Games on Tuesday.

According to China Daily Asia, the Asian giants earned many free-kicks but failed to break the deadlock. Sweden, on the other hand, played conservatively as a defeat would have led to their elimination.

In the first half of the match, both sides only made three shots on target.

The Swedish footballers changed their formations in the second half, but the team failed to transform their physical advantage into goals.

China will face the Germans in the quarterfinal round while Sweden will take on the United States.

"We had missed the opening ceremony, but we'd like to attend the closing ceremony in Rio," China's national women's football team captain Li Dongna said. "We have been in the quarterfinals and we know there will be many accidental factors in the next stage, so let's see what will happen."

Meanwhile, Brazil, who also belonged to the Group E, produced the same 0-0 result with South Africa.

In Group F, Canada got the better of Germany for the first time in international games. Although 30-year-old German midfielder Melanie Behringer's penalty shot found the net in the 13th minute, Canadian captain Melissa Tancredi turned the table before the half-time whistle, according to China.org.

Canada has got three victories in a row and entered the quarterfinals with Germany. Australia smashed Zimbabwe 6-1 to survive the group as one of the two best-third finishers.

In Group G, Colombia held on to a surprising 2-2 draw with the United States, but they have been eliminated.

France will face against Canada in the quarterfinals, after winning New Zealand 3-0 in Salvador.
