Ferguson Police Officer Shot, No Link to Michael Brown Protests, Authorities State

County Police Chief Jon Belmar

(Photo : REUTERS) County Police Chief Jon Belmar interviewed on Sunday clearing speculations that the protesters for Micheal Brown were to hold responsible for the shooting of a Ferguson Police.

A Ferguson Police Officer was shot on Saturday night while responding to a burglary in Ferguson, Missouri, but County Police Chief Jon Belmar noted that it was not in any way linked to the protesters asking for justice for the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Reports say that there were actually two separate protests related to the killing of Michael Brown going on at the same time that the police officer was shot. There were over 100 protesters that night rallying and chanting the words "No justice, no peace" and 24 police officers who made sure that the protests were under control.

Authorities stated on Sunday that they are searching for the suspects in the shooting of the unnamed police officer. According to Belmar, the two suspects fled the area as soon as the police chased them. Apparently, one of the two men turned and shot the policeman in the arm.

The two men were reportedly standing outside the closed community center when the police officer approached them. Police then closed nearby streets while helicopters and officers searched the area for the suspects.

In a news conference on Sunday, Belmar added that the incident was not blamed on the protesters as they were only peacefully demonstrating.

Belmar stated that the injury the officer suffered was not life-threatening at all and he is expected to survive. According to reports, the officer who was shot also returned fire but was not sure whether or not the suspects had been hit.

Despite assurances that there is no link between the Michael Brown protests and the recent shooting, some still linked the two together, causing further anger and strain on the relationship between police and citizens in the area.

Ferguson's population is two-thirds African-American but sources say that only three of the 53 police officers for the region are black.

Meanwhile, also on Saturday, Brown's parents released a statement saying that they were unaffected by the video released by Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson. Jackson has videotaped himself apologizing to Brown's parents regarding the killing of their son by one of his officers, Darren Wilson.

The case against Wilson is still under scrutiny as judges weigh the possibility of Brown's human rights being violated at the time he was killed.
