90-Year-Old Florida Man Arrested For Feeding The Homeless

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida has implemented a new law regarding the strict regulations of organizations feeding the homeless residents in the city and the latest violation was committed by a 90-year-old man, a pastor, who was on the streets on Tuesday.

The pastor, who was identified as Arnold Abbott, was with another pastor when he was arrested by the police while having a feeding program. According to the police officials, the pastors violated the said ordinance and they noted that the two might face up to 60 days behind bars and a fine of US$500.

A witness uploaded a video on YouTube showing the two pastors setting up on a side walk when the police came. There was a long queue of homeless people in the area and they were booing the officials saying "Shame on you!" and people asking why the pastor was being arrested.

Abbott tried to calm the crowd down and he went with the police with no resistance. In the video, the people were also saying that the whole world was watching the police arresting the pastors.

The police also packed up and confiscated the food brought by the organization. They even asked the men who delivered the food to retrieve the items.

The city where the arrest happened is said to house over 10,000 homeless people. The law was implemented last month and outdoor food stands reportedly have permits.

In addition, an entity should obtain special permission to conduct a feeding program

Also, the stands should not be close to any residential property and should be away for at least 500 feet. The law also stated that the food stands should have a portable toilet.

The officials who passed the law pressed that distributing food to the needy is just approving homelessness in the city.

Abbot is said to run a nonprofit organization called "Love Thy Neighbor" which he established after his wife died. According to reports, the pastor intends to feed the homeless again on Wednesday despite his recent arrest.

Pastor Abbott pressed that he followedthe rules of the law but failed to have a portable toilet. He said it is the job of the municipality and not his.
