Suicide Bombing In Nigerian School Kills 47l, Boko Haram Might Be Responsible

At least 47 people were reportedly killed when a suicide bombing took place outside a school located in Nigeria leaving 79 people wounded and police officials suspect Boko Haram might be responsible for the said attack.

According to police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu, the attacker was disguised as one of the students just outside the principal's office as the children gathered for a daily speech. The school is said to be a government boarding school located in the town of Potiskum and police suspect that the school was targeted because it taught Western ideas.

The explosion took place at 7:50 in the morning and one of the students described the bombing as a "blinding flash of light". A student said they were waiting for their teachers at the assembly ground when the huge explosion was set off.

It has not been verified yet how many of the 49 killed were students.

This is not the first time that the militants of the Boko Haram group has attacked schools that teaches Western curriculum. Back in February, gunmen from the said group killed at least 40 students when they opened fired at hostels of students located in the town of Buni Yadi, Yobe.

Last year, there were 42 students killed when the dormitories in another government boarding school near Potiskum were attacked.

Aside from the attacks in the schools, there was also another bombing in the marketplace of Yobe state last week that lead to killing 15 people. A suicide bomber set off the bomb in Potiskuum where a large crowd of Shiite Muslims were having their annual Ashura ceremony to commemorate the death of Imam Husseyn.

Boko Haram continues to launch attacks on civilians despite its ceasefire agreement with the government. Also, hopes of the release of the abducted Chibok girls are now starting to fade despite reports of the Nigerian government that they are finding ways to negotiate with the rebels.
