They said that the incident occurred at a residence in the 200 block of West Longleaf Drive in Auburn.

Mitchell, only 18-years old, was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center by ambulance with multiple gunshot wounds. He died shortly after arrival at the emergency room due to the severity of his injuries.

Since officials are conducting an investigation, no other information is currently being released.

The death is being treated as a homicide as Mitchell's body has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences medical examiner's office in Montgomery for a post-mortem examination.

The Auburn Police and Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences were still working the scene in a parking lot inside the Tiger Lodge apartment complex at six in the morning.

The report ends saying that anyone with information about the situation is encouraged to contact the Auburn Police Department.

Mitchell graduated from Opelika High and redshirted this season for the Auburn Tigers. He was ranked the 17th best tight end in the country by 247sport.com.

He did not play this season though, as he sat out in order to gain weight and ready himself for 2015. His return was supposed to be an integral one as he was to contend for a starting spot at half-back and tight end following the departures of seniors Brandon Fulse and C.J. Uzomah.

Mitchell's performance during the fall camp turned heads. He had completed the biggest play in the final scrimmage of preseason drills as he caught a deep pass for a 70-yard gain.

Throughout his high school career, he rushed for 392 yards, had 17 touchdowns, and added 403 received yards as a junior in 2013.
