Russia Victory Day: Moscow Prepares For Kim Jong Un's Visit

(Photo : Reuters) Pyongyang has rejected Donald Trump's offer to stage talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un if he emerges victorious in the polls.

In less than a month, Russia will mark its 70th Victory Day Anniversary, where at least 26 world leaders are expected to attend, most notably North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Kim had accepted Russia's invitation in January, making this trip his first ever foreign visit since he took power in 2011.

"At this moment, we are working through all the logistical questions with all the foreign delegations coming to the May 9 celebrations, including the North Korean delegation," said the Kremlin's press office.

The May 9 celebration marks Russia's 70th year since its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Kim has never met any head of state. The news of his trip to Russia even went ahead of a planned trip to Beijing --- a long time ally of Pyongyang.

North Korea has remained silent on Kim's visit to Moscow, but Kremlin is confident Kim will attend.

"Let me assure you once again that the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is expected to participate in the May 9 celebrations," said the Kremlin's press office.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry had earlier said President Park Geun-hye will not attend the celebrations, but will send her aide to the event instead. This clearly suggests that the meeting between the leaders of two Koreas is not happening anytime soon.

Aside from Park, President Barack Obama will also skip the event. The State Department said Obama is sending his envoy to Moscow to attend in his behalf.

Other leaders from some European countries had also rejected Moscow's invitation citing its role in the Ukraine crisis and the annexation of Crimea.
