A statement from the Academy Awards said the organization appreciates the concerns brought to its office and that it regrets any part of the program that offended viewers especially Asians.

Twenty five Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members of Asian ancestry including Takei, Lee, and Oh signed a letter addressed to the award-giving body to protest the "tasteless and offensive" satire targeting Asians on the Feb. 29 red-carpet event.

The letter, according to The Hollywood Reporter, demands concrete plans on how racist incidents will be avoided in future Oscars ceremonies. It also mentioned that out of the millions of moviegoers that the Oscars reached around the world, 60 percent are of Asian heritage.

THR reported that Takei was caught saying how surprised he is about how the Academy seem to be oblivious to stereotyping people. He added that he expects the Oscars to apologize for its "shameful presentation."

During the 2016 Oscars, host Chris Rock was accused of racially stereotyping three boys on stage by referencing their Asian looks to child exploitation and the manufacturing industry. Although no race was mentioned, protesters have assumed that Rock denoted China in his joke.
