Study Finds Facebook is the First Step for Taiwanese Students to Make Friends

After getting to know them, they will add their Facebook friends on Line, an instant messaging app that has become big in Asian countries.

University students in Taiwan have three stages to make friends, and it does not start in a personal meeting. 

A survey conducted by the Shih Hsin University in Taipei found that young adults aged 18 to 22 usually befriend people first on Facebook. After getting to know them, they will add their Facebook friends on Line, an instant messaging app that has become big in Asian countries.

Most of the interaction happens via Line such as audio and video calls, and late night messaging. They will then provide their personal phone number for a much personal connection. 

Meanwhile, Instagram is their least favorite platform to make friends. Following someone on Instagram was at the bottom of the list of methods to make friends and contact each other. 

The study added that only 42.2 percent of the respondents will ask for a person's contact information after meeting them. It also showed that they are more comfortable in talking through social media platforms rather than in person if they are not familiar with each other.

Shih Hsin University's survey intends to study the impact of using smartphones to university students. A total of 3,178 young adults in the age bracket 18 to 22 were polled with a margin of error of 1.85 percent. 

According to Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry, more than 80 percent of Taiwanese households has access to the internet. Taiwan does not experience internet censorship as severe as mainland China.
