President Xi Jinping has encouraged world leaders to step up their efforts to aid economic growth and remove all trade barriers during the G20 summit in China over the weekend.

During his briefing at the summit, Xi encouraged the world's economic superpowers to avoid empty talk and confront sluggish economic growth and the rising protectionism.

"The economy still faces multiple risks and challenges, including a lack of growth momentum and consumption, turbulent financial markets, receding global trade and investment," said Xi.

While addressing the leaders present at the summit, he also talked about the potential future of world economy.

"We hope the Hangzhou summit will come up with a prescription for the world economy and lead it back to the road of strong, balanced comprehensive and sustainable," he added.

This is the first G20 Summit to be held in China. Chinese officials are hoping that the meeting would cement China's position as an economic stronghold, ready to be given a role on the world stage.

The eleventh G20 Summit was held at a circular hall in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province over the weekend.

President Xi greeted every president and prime minister at the event and held firmly to US President Barack Obama, with both men smiling.

An airport gaffe when President Obama arrived in Beijing had left many observers worried about the state of the relations between both nations.

Rather than being welcomed with a red carpet staircase, Obama was welcomed with a metal stairway as he alighted from his plane.

Chinese officials were, however, quick to comment on the incident stating that it was the US' decision. They added that the peaceful co-existence of the two world powers is a matter of greater concern.
