Former tennis women's singles world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark has been awarded a wild card slot into the 2016 WTA Wuhan Open tournament, the event organizers announced on Monday, a day following her entry into the US Open quarterfinals.

"I'm very happy at the thought of going back to Wuhan again and meeting with the enthusiastic Chinese fans there," Wozniacki said.

According to Xinhua, the right-handed native of Odense has already competed twice in the WTA Premier 5 hard surface event. Wozniacki managed to reach the semifinal round of the 2.4-million-US dollar tennis competition in the year 2014 and is the eighth-seeded player of the tourney.

The Wuhan Open is held annually in Wuhan. The matches are played in the Optics Valley International Tennis Center, which is scheduled to run from September 23 to October 1 of this year.

Nine of the top 10 women tennis players in the world have confirmed that they would take part in this year's tournament, the Wuhan Open organizing committee said. The current world No. 7 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus is the only top-ranked player who would miss the event. The 26-year-old two-time Australian Open champion announced in July that she was pregnant and would temporarily step away from the sport.

According to Sina, with Wozniacki's entry, the 2016 Wuhan Open would feature eight Grand Slam winners and five former world No. 1. A total of 43 players from 23 different countries have qualified for the annual tennis tournament.

In Wuhan, Wozniacki would also participate in local activities to promote the Wuhan Marathon, an international sports event new to the central Chinese city.

In November 2014, Wozniacki completed the 26.2-mile New York marathon in a remarkable time of 3:26:33. Her debut marathon time was good enough for her to qualify for the 2016 Boston Marathon, but the Dane superstar said that said that she would not run another marathon for a few years.
