China Wins 2 More Gold Medals in Marathon to End Rio Paralympics Campaign on Top of Medal Table

(Photo : gettyimages.com) China bagged two more gold medals in the wheelchair marathon event as the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games Draws to a close.

Chinese athletes claimed two victories in the marathon competition on the last day of the 15th Summer Paralympic Games in the city of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to further increase the number of gold medals that they will be taking back home.

According to China Daily, Zhou Lihong, 32, was awarded the gold medal for the women's T54 marathon event after a photo finish with the American wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden.

Both athletes crossed the finish line in an identical one hour 38 minutes and 44 seconds, and it was only after scrutiny of video replays that Zhou was declared the winner of the race.

Amanda McGrory of the United States took the bronze medal with an official time of 1:38.45.

The victory gave Zhou her third medal and her first individual highest honor in the prestigious quadrennial sporting event for disabled athletes.

Zhou finished third in the 400-meters T54 to claim the bronze medal in Rio. The Chinese wheelchair racer was also part of China's gold medal-winning 4 X 400 meter relay T53/T54 team, along with Huang Lisha, Zhou Hongzhuan, Liu Wenju, Li Yingjie and Ma Jing.

Meanwhile, Li Chaoyan won the athletics men's marathon T45/46 to give China another gold medal. According to Xinhua, the 27-year-old Chinese athlete registered an official time of 2:33.35 to beat Abderrahman Ait Khamouch of Spain who grabbed the silver medal in 2:37.01. Manuel Mendes of Portugal took the bronze with a time of 2:49.57.

China has won the most number of medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Chinese athletes claimed a total of 239 medals; 107 gold, 81 silver and 51 bronze.

Great Britain comes next with 64 gold, 39 silver and 44 bronze medals, while Ukraine is third on the medal table with 41 gold, 27 silver and 39 bronze medals.
