Linda Chung’s Character Challenged in ‘All That is Bitter is Sweet’

Hong Kong actress Linda Chung, who is playing the lead for the upcoming TVB drama 'All That is Bitter is Sweet' says that her character, To Kai Kei, faced a lot of challenges in the story.

Linda plays the role of To Kai Kei, a widow and the only daughter of a physician named Du Yange, a role which will be played by To Sam. Kai Kei is a woman who is trying to survive in a very patriarchal society in the early republican era of China where modern and ancient medical practices are at a crossroad.

Linda's character in the story will challenge the regime of that time by bringing her family's business back into the market which will then make her the very first female doctor and pharmacist ever in China.

In the story, Kai Kei's family estate will be confiscated by the government after her father gets imprisoned after being wrongly accused of a crime. Kai Kei had to survive on her own while still grieving for the death of her husband Chong Kai Cho who will be played by actor Raymond Wong.

"In ancient times, women didn't have to accomplish anything. All they needed to do was to take care of their husbands and children," Linda shared, adding that her character has a very different personality from most women during that time.

Linda said her character has an avant-garde kind of attitude, but had too many struggles to deal with. The actress said that people could probably relate to her character and somehow find hope in their own lives through Kai Kei.

As her character faced challenges in the story, Linda has also undergone some difficulties while shooting the film, particularly her fluency in Chinese.

Linda was born and educated in Canada which contributed to how she cannot speak fluently in Chinese, but the actress said that was getting by and her abilities have improved.
