China's Ministry of Commerce has slammed critics who clam that the world's second largest economy does not favor businesses.

China's Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Shen Dangyang addressed reporters on Tuesday, explaining that foreign investors seeking special terms of trading are the ones giving the country a bad image.

"Why are there complaints? Because foreign companies in China that rely on low costs and preferential treatment are now struggling," he inquired.

"Companies that rely on preferential policies to make easy money feel the environment has worsened. But companies with real foresight, real competitiveness, they feel that the investment environment has improved," Shen explained. "China's foreign investment market is not deteriorating."

He added that the future of trade in China is quite competitive, and the country's leaders are not "blindly optimistic."

Shen was replying to a growing perception that foreign investors investing in China are finding it harder as compared to Chinese investors in other countries.

Recent remarks by a European official during the G20 Summit last month also put China in the spotlight.

"China, while asking in public for more openness and steps to counter protectionism is still giving Western investors only a limited access to their market," said the official.

Foreign investors are reportedly concerned about China's recent laws and policies, which some fear will make it even harder to do business in the country.

Critics claim that the new regulations will either remove all foreign investors from the country or make life quite hard for them to operate.
