Zhang Jilong Resigns; Chung Mong Gyuis Named New AFC Vice President

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has made public the recent appointment of South Korea's Chung Mong Gyu on Monday as the East Zone governing body's newest vice-president after Zhang Jilong of China resigns from the post.

According to Xinhua, the AFC Executive Committee has confirmed the appointment of the 54-year-old South Korean, who currently heads the South Korean Football Association as its president.

The native of Seoul has served as Hyundai Motor Company's chairperson and CEO from January 1996 to December 1998. He has been managing Hyundai Development Company, a comprehensive construction firm, since his appointment to chairmanship in March 1999.

Chung has contributed in the development of the sport in Korea's soccer industry by owning football clubs. He used to be the owner of Ulsan Hyundai from January 1994 to December 1996 and the Jeonbuk Hyundai from January 1997 to March 1999. Chung currently owns the football club of Busan IPARK.

Meanwhile, AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain thanked Zhang, a veteran football administrator, for his exceptional work for the Asian football.

"Through his tireless devotion, unparalleled expertise and love for our game, Jilong dedicated so much to Asian football - especially when he was acting President in 2013," the 51-year-old AFC chief said in a statement. "In every way, Asian football has certainly been enriched and inspired by his dedicated service." 

According to Inside World Football, the 64-year-old Zhang's career in the field of football administration began in the year 1978 when he joined the Chinese Football Association. He chaired the Finance Committee for over a decade holding the position from year 2000 to 2011.

In 2002, the native of Yantai, Shandong province was elected as AFC vice-president and held the post in the next two elections. Zhang served as the governing body's acting president from June 2011 to May 2013.

He also held key roles on several FIFA Committees, including the Referees Committee, Security and Integrity Committee and Futsal Committee.
