Chinese wine-tasters scored a win in the world championships of Revue du Vin De France-spearheaded three-hour competition at Chateau Du Galoupet in southeastern France.

The championship attracted 21 teams from around the world.

The group from China clinched the top spot while the team from France took the second position and the US came in third. Former champion Spain only stood 10th in the competition.

The competitors had to taste six types of white and red wine each. They were asked to identify the main grape variety used in producing it and the country of production. The competitors also needed to gauge the name, producers and age of the wine.

The Chinese team, consisted of Chen Tzu-Chien, Chunxia Liu, Ma Xianchen and Chen Xi, was coached by Alexander Brice Leboucq.

They attributed their success to knowledge and luck. However, they added that the process of getting on the team was intensely competitive.

China's wine industry has shown steady growth in recent years as the land under vineyard cultivation is growing. Last year, the country had 1.97 million acres of land used for growing grapes, the second largest area devoted for planting said fruit, only next to Spain.

In 2011, Jea Bei Lan, a winery in Ningxia province, won an international gold medal for its Bordeaux-style Grand Reserve wine from 2009. The wine was later named as one of the two 'most promising' wines in the region by a well-known wine critic Jancis Robinson.

The organizers said the winning Chinese team remained humble amid their victory.
