The autopsy info regarding the death of Jerome Murdough, a mentally ill former marine has been finally released on Friday revealing that the cause of his death inside an NYC prison last February is hyperthermia.

A spokeswoman for the medical examiner has announced the information in behalf of the medical examiner and said that the Antipsychotic medications that he was taking in for treating his schizoaffective disorder also contributed to his death.

56-year-old Murdough was found dead at the foot of his bed with an internal body temperature of 103 degrees and a pool of vomit and blood was found on the floor after he was not checked on by officials for four hours.

Murdough has been on the mental observation unit for just a week before he died. He was sent there because he trespassed in a property and could not pay the US$2,500 bail posed on him.

His family has confirmed that Murdough suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The drugs that Murdough had taken were said to make people who takes it more sensitive to heat.

The mother of Murdough, Alma, 75, has stated that they are planning to file a US$25 million lawsuit. The family knew about the autopsy and they said that they would like to call for a criminal investigation.

The results of the medical examiner is of great evidence that the death of Murdough might have been caused by violation of his civil rights and human rights that will amount to criminally negligent homicide, family attorney Derek Sells explains.

Authorities are now investigating and a spokesman from the Department of Correction claims that the safety of the inmates and the staff is their top priority. They already took actions after the release of the autopsy information so as to prevent the same situation from happening again.

This is not the first case in which a mentally ill inmate has died. Last fall, another inmate died due to sexually damaging himself because he was locked for seven days in a cell. Mayor Bill De Blasio is also set to examin the violent conditions at the complex as well as the treatment of the staff to the inmates.
