Tech giant Google has announced that its Chrome Internet browser has reached a new milestone. Google said that Chrome has reached two billion active installs on both desktop and mobile platforms. Chrome was able to achieve this feat 12 years following its release in September 2008.

Achieving two billion installs on the mobile and desktop platform is a first for any Google product. In 2015, during the company's I/O Developer Conference, Google said that its Android, Chrome, YouTube, and Search services have a collective user base of more than one billion users, according to The Verge.

In April, Chrome passed the one billion mark on mobile alone. Many tech analysts attributed Google Chrome's success to the current growth of the Internet in developing countries. It also helped that the Android platform, which uses Chrome as its default web browser. Android currently controls close to 90 percent of the smartphone market.

As part of Google's initiative to develop new technologies for faster web browsing, the company has allied with notable browser players like Mozilla, Microsoft, and Opera. Together, these web giants have established what they call "progressive web apps" (PWA).

Progressive Web Apps are slated to headline the upcoming Chrome Dev Summit. At the conference, Google is expected to highlight its efforts to develop the mobile platform as well as the Internet browser technology.

In a statement acquired by CNet, Research Director Jason Wong said, "The mobile web is unavoidable. Users are using smartphones and tablets to access websites more and more. Google has changed its [search] algorithm to reward mobile-optimized websites."
