Music streaming service Spotify recently announced that it is rolling out a patch in order to fix the bug that forces its desktop application to repeatedly write huge amounts of data to user hard drives.

The issue was first reported by Ars Technica after some of its researchers found out that Spotify has written up to 10GB of data an hour into their computers. Tech experts claim that the unnecessary writing and rewriting of data to computer hard drives can damage and shorten the life span of these devices. Computers that use solid state drives or SSDs are more susceptible to damage because of the continuous read and write sequences.

Ars Technica decided to delve deeper into the issue and found out that Spotify was able to write and rewrite up to 700GB worth of data in just a span of 24 hours. The company later added that the bug affects both Mac and PC desktop computers.

The issue quickly gained negative reactions from users, some of them claimed that the Spotify player even continues to write and rewrite data even if it is in idle mode and no music is being streamed.

In a statement acquired by BBC, Pen Test Partners analyst Ken Munro said, "It would take a long while to wear out an SSD nowadays, by that doesn't really excuse the Spotify bug!"

Spotify quickly reacted to the complaints and said that the issue has been addressed in its version 1.0.42. Spotify said that the updated version of its player is already available for users to download.
