China has finally confirmed its support to new United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions against North Korea over its most recent nuclear test. The Chinese foreign ministry said that Beijing resolutely opposes North Korean nuclear test and it supports the new set of sanctions against the country.

"China resolutely opposes the DPRK conducting nuclear tests," ministry's spokesperson Gen Shuang said. "To achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, maintain peace and stability on the peninsula and resolve nuclear issues through peaceful means like dialogue and negotiation; that is the consistent position of China."

Shuang's remarks came a day after a Japanese media report suggested that the U.S. and China have reached a consensus on imposing new sanctions on North Korea including a ban on country's coal exports to China.

The UN diplomats from China and United States are currently holding talks with representatives of three other UNSC permanent member countries - UK, France and Russia - on the new draft resolution against North Korea. Among three other permanent members, UK and France are expected to support the new draft resolution. Russia, on the other hand, might have some differences over the text of new draft. Beijing is likely to persuade its close ally Moscow to accept the new draft.

The new set of sanctions against the North Korea comes after the secretive communist state conducted its fifth and biggest ever nuclear test in September. The isolated Korean peninsula nation also carried out nearly two dozen missile tests in 2016. The new UNSC sanctions are unlikely to impact North Korea's controversial nuclear program.
