Marin, who has a spectacular 254-78 career win-loss record, registered her third consecutive victory over the 33rd-ranked shuttler following the Spanish badminton star's triumph in the 2012 Djarum Indonesia Open and the 2015 Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open.

After succeeding in the second round, the native of Huelva, Spain will be facing the sixth seeded Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinal round. The 19-year-old Japanese shuttler defeated Indonesian Debora Rumete Vehrenica in their second round duel in 21-11, 21-10 win that only lasted for 20 minutes.

Marin and Yamaguchi have faced each other four times with both players scoring two wins apiece.

Aside from winning the gold medal in the last prestigious quadrennial sporting event in Rio three months ago, the 23-year-old Marin is gunning to win her second-straight Hong Kong Open title and her first World Superseries trophy for this season.

The two-time world champion has also set her sight on the upcoming BWF's season-ending World Superseries Finals that will take place in December in the Emirate of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

"I would like to end the year with the title in Dubai," Marin told AFP.

Marin is currently ranked No. 20 in the USD 1 million Superseries finale, but having won the Olympic Games title she is assured of a spot in the major badminton event.
