Deadly Bombing Further Weakens Ukraine Ceasefire As NATO Launches Exercises

Russia-Ukraine Crisis

A deadly bombing further shook the already weak ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members went on with their exercises in Western Ukraine.

The bombing in eastern Ukraine yesterday left six people dead and 15 injured. In spite of this, NATO proceeded to supply arms to Kiev's army to assist in its fight against pro-Moscow separatists.

Around 1,100 troops from NATO members including the U.S., Canada, Britain and Germany conducted exercises in western Ukraine. The exercises focus on peacekeeping and stability operations through countering improvised explosive devices, patrolling and convoys.

Reports from Kiev confirmed that weaponries continued to strike the residential districts around the Donetsk airport, which is said to be widely controlled by rebels.

The militants said that they government forces of Kiev fired on their bases for more than 40 times in the last few days, killing 20 people.

The rebels also accused Kiev of failing to swap the prisoners they held that they called as a "one-on-one" basis. The swap was part of the agreed ceasefire deal last September 5.

Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, accused Kiev's government of using the ceasefire just to regroup their forces then eventually attack them again. They will not allow that to happen, Zakharchenko said.

In the announcement of Defense minister Valery Heletey regarding NATO's arms delivery, he noted that over 3,500 Russian troops have already crossed the border and more than 25,000 more were near it.

Moscow still continues to deny the allegations despite Russian soldiers being killed and captured by Ukraine. The U.S. and the European Union (EU) already set sanctions against Russia because of the attacks.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin responded to the allegations and the sanctions saying the U.S. and NATO are just fuelling the crisis in Ukraine and are ruining Russia's relationship with the EU.

However, NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Putin already trampled all the rules and commitments that preserved peace in Europe for decades when Russia seized Crimea and eastern Ukraine.
