Everton is reportedly planning a January double-swoop for Manchester United forwards Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay as Toffees boss Ronald Koeman wants to improve his attacking options in midseason.

Koeman, 53, who took over from Roberto Martinez as Everton manager in June, recently admitted that he desires to bring both Rooney and Depay at the Goodison Park soon. Rumors have emerged that the club is prepared to get them for him "either on loan or permanently", as per the Daily Express.

The Red Devils are reportedly "reluctant" to let go of Rooney even on a loan spell as United head coach Jose Mourinho still includes the English captain in his plans despite not placing him in the starting XI during the past several matches.

Depay is the more realistic target for Everton as the 22-year-old Dutchman has not played up to expectations at the Old Trafford since he was acquired in the summer of 2015.

The Netherlands international has scored a dismal two goals in 29 Premier League appearances last season. He has not scored a goal yet this season as he was only utilized by Mourinho four times, playing in just 20 minutes, in 14 English top-flight games so far.

A lone deal for Depay is speculated to be imminent as soon as the winter transfer window opens in the New Year while Koeman is expected to take his chance on luring Rooney next summer.

Koeman has long been a fan of Depay's skills even when he was still Southampton's manager last year. He recently told reporters that his fondness of the Dutchman "has not changed" and that he has "to be patient".

"We will do business in January," Koeman said.

Caught Offside indicated that Depay's "chances of regular playing time look bleak" as he is below Rooney, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the forward position and so a move to Everton should be a welcome development for him.

Rooney began his senior career with the Toffees as a 16-year-old in 2002 before he was acquired by United for $32 million in the summer of 2004, which made him the most expensive teenager in football at that time.
