While 4K resolution hasn't yet been widely adopted, the international non-profit corporation Video Electronics Standards Association announced a new DisplayPort 1.3 standard.

The standard will be able to accommodate video resolutions up to 5K, or 5120 x 2880 pixels. The new standard will replace the current 1.2a.

DisplayPort, which is a rival of the high-definition multimedia interface connector, is generally used to link PCs to monitors.

Electronics manufacturer Seiki has already said it will build monitors able to support the new 1.3 and the upcoming HDMI 2.0 standards, which also can accommodate the 4K's 4,096 x 2,160 pixel resolution.

Some 50 percent quicker than its predecessor, DisplayPort 1.3 has the speed required to hold resolutions higher than that of 4K.

VESA also said the standard is capable of taking multiple monitors supporting 4K at 60 frames per second.

"These new enhancements to DisplayPort will facilitate both higher resolution displays, as well as easier integration of DisplayPort into multi-protocol data transports, which will satisfy consumer's desire for simplicity and ease-of-use," said VESA Board of Directors Chair Alan Kobayashi.

While the old DisplayPort can transfer let 25.92 gigabytes of information a second, the new standard can relay 32.4 gigabytes per second, a 20 percent increase in output.

The aggregate data transfer rate is divided among four pipes that each has a maximum transfer speed of 8.1 Gbps.

The DockPort and Thunderbolt standards also use the DisplayPort and support more protocols for transferring information between peripherals, such as external storage, and computers. The latest standard from VESA is able to support both the standards.

The Thunderbolt standard, which requires PCI-Express to transfer data, is used by Apple Inc.'s Mac computer.
