Video game developer Cloud Imperium confirmed on Monday that it is ditching Crytek's CryEngine for Amazon's Lumberyard engine on its upcoming Alpha 2.6 release of "Star Citizen."

Cloud Imperium said that the switch was not hard at all since Lumberyard does trace its roots to the CryEngine game engine, according to Engadget. Aside from taking advantage of Lumberyard, Cloud Imperium said that it will also use Amazon's cloud infrastructure, Amazon Web Services, in order to make video game streaming easy for gamers.

In a statement acquired by GameSpot, Cloud Imperium creative director Chris Roberts said, "Lumberyard provides ground breaking technology features for online games, including deep back-end cloud integration on AWS and its social component with Twitch that enables us to easily and instantly connect to millions of global gamers."

Rumors claimed that the switch to Amazon's Lumberyard engine is a response to the recent financial woes that have plagued Crytek. However, Cloud Imperium immediately dismissed allegations, saying that the company have been working with Amazon for more than a year already and that the decision to publicize the switch is just a mere coincidence with the current problems Crytek is facing.

"Star Citizen" was announced in October 2012 as a crowdfunding project. It was able to raise more than $139 million, making it the most successful crowdfunding project in history.

The game's single player campaign mode called "Squadron 42" was recently delayed and its first-person shooter mode called "Star Marine" is currently available in beta.
