Chris Brown Releases New Album, "X"

Chris Brown makes his comeback with the release of his much-delayed sixth studio album "X."  The album was launched Sept. 16 and many believe that it's his best album yet.

The R&B singer announced the release of his album on his Instagram account "featuring 5 #1 hits," which also comes with a video.

"Team Breezy #XTheAlbum out now!" the singer announced on his social media ccount.

"X" should have been released late last year, following his first single "First China." However, things did not turn out well for the 25-year-old star.

His many legal dilemmas, including the charge of  assault in Washington, D.C. stemming from parole violation, which forced him to undergo rehab and 108 days in jail, all posed a threat to the release of his album. Nevertheless, his summer hit "Loyal" reached Billboard Hot 100's ninth spot despite his being detained.

Many music lovers are sure to fall in love with this album, which also features some of the hottest music stars of today, including Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, Tyga, Trey Songz, Usher, Rick Ross, and Jhene Aiko.

In an interview with MTV March last year, Brown discussed the direction of his album. He said he "wanted to have the same mentality as I did with the first album -- me being green, me not thinking I know what's hot and what's next, me just being Chris Brown."

Brown also said he wanted this album to showcase him as a singer.

"I think this will show my vocal ability a lot more. I've developed a falsetto, I can sing at a higher register, and I can elaborate more on my skill," he said.

But why "X"?

Brown explained that the title could "refer to an ex-girlfriend," being rejected, being "able to grow up" and passing "the bullsh*t -- now."

Here's what reviews have to say about Brown's "X."

"Those are the standout songs in what's primarily a sea of mediocrity. Mr. Brown is a lithe singer but not a particularly emphatic one - on his best songs, he darts in and out vocally over up-tempo production well-suited to his fluid dance moves. But in this album, these feverish impulses feel muted. He sounds tentative, maybe a little fatigued." - Jon Caramanica, The New York Times.

"But once gratuitous fillers are skipped, gems appear, especially on the closing half, where Brown is lucid about his tabloid love life. Lyrics from the love songs could hint at Brown's post-jail perspective. Otherwise, there are few clues as to whether his time away altered his music or mindset - an unfortunate missed opportunity." - Brad Wete, Billboard.

"There is nothing on X that hints about whether Brown has turned a corner in his roller-coaster celebrity life, nor did we expect to find any. What X does prove is that no matter what happens to Chris outside of the studio, his in-studio track record will go on unblemished." - Rob Markman, MTV.
