It will consist of pieces of hardware called "Modules" that will be fitted into a structural base frame called "Endo," which will hold and link all the modules together.

Users of Google's upcoming modular smartphone will have a wide range of options to choose from. Modules will include keyboard, screen display, battery, cameras and speakers. All modules come in different sizes.

The main frame will have slots where the modules connect.

Initially, only two sizes for the base frame will be available. A large frame will be made available at a later time.

With Google's modular concept, users can look forward to building their own phones while choosing specific features they want. They can also design what they want their phones to look like, all at a low price.

Project Ara's modular smartphone was initially announced by Motorola Mobility on Oct. 29, 2013 before Google decided to sell the latter to Chinese computer technology firm Lenovo.

After the decision, Google held on to Motorola's Advanced Technology and Projects group. It integrated the unit into Android's main team division, thus continuing the development of Project Ara's modular concept.

The modular smartphone is being designed for six billion people, including current smartphone users.

Google's  aim is to get more phone hardware developers to participate in the project. This will increase the number of developers and manufacturers, instead of relying on just a few giant manufacturers.
