Different Human Faces Caused by Evolution, Scientist Say

Faces

Scientists from the University of California said that different human faces are the result of an evolutionary pressure that allows humans to be easily recognized.

Michael Sheehan, one of the researchers, said that social interaction serves to drive this evolutionary trend.

He said that humans are phenomenally good at recognizing faces because there is a specialized part of the brain that does that.

Sheehan believes that their study shows that humans were selected to be unique and easily recognizable.

Michael Nachman, another researcher involved in the study, said that social interaction may have facilitated this evolution.

This allowed humans to be individually recognizable and that human social structure has defined the way humans look, he added.

To come up with these findings, they used the US Army database that compiled the body measurements of male and female personnel.

Aside from that, they access data that came from the 1000 Genome project, which allows scientists to sequence 1,000 human genomes and catalogue 40 million genetic.

Through these findings, researchers found that there has been a natural selection for variations that facilitate recognition on individuals.

Researchers also found out the facial variation in modern humans was already happening prior to the split of the lineage of Neanderthals, Denisovans and modern humans.

Denisovans are humans that also lived during the Paleolithic Era that has the same origins as the Neanderthals

Sheehan said that aside from recognizing people by physical traits, facial recognition still remains to be one of the most predominant ways to recognize people.
