There are rumors that Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney could still pull off a Chinese Super League move as the end of China's winter transfer window draws near.

The Telegraph reported that the English Premier League side "could still sell" Rooney to a Chinese club before the China window closes on Feb. 28 as the England national team skipper has not found favor in the rotation of United boss Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is said to be planning to keep the Englishman at the Old Trafford until the end of the season and will try to sell him in the summer. However, speculations abound that the 15-year veteran is feeling uncomfortable with his new bench-warmer role at United and could push for a transfer soon.

Rooney, 31, had offers of at least $40 million a year in salaries from China top-flight clubs, namely capital city team Beijing Guoan and six-straight CSL champions Guangzhou Evergrande, but he had turned down all of them. He has a year-and-a-half left on his contract with the Red Devils and is currently earning $374,000 a week as the second highest-paid player in the Premier League next to teammate Paul Pogba.

Beijing and Guangzhou have reportedly "not given up hope" that either could still work out a deal before the deadline next Tuesday as Rooney is rumored to be "unhappy" in England.

The report also mentioned that if a winter transfer is not reached, then a "summer move may still seem more likely," but the suitors of United's all-time leading scorer are said to be "working hard to make a deal happen" soonest.

ESPN noted that Rooney has not started an English top-flight match since December of last year and is slowly being dropped in Mourinho's pecking order.

This season, Rooney has only appeared in 17 out of the club's 25 Premier League games and most of them were coming off the bench. He has scored only two goals so far, a big drop from his usual production in the past seasons.
