This Made in Russia Hoverbike Looks Way Cool -- and Way Too Dangerous

A made in Russia contraption is being billed by its maker as the first dirt bike that flies and a slick video shows just that.

The Scorpion-3 is a single-seat electric quadcopter made by Hoversurf, Inc., a start-up based in Moscow that's in the business of building aerial drones. It's a unique electric-powered vehicle combining a motorcycle seat with quadcopter drone technology, bringing speed agility and stability of flight to the hands of amateur and professional navigators.

Scorpion-3 can either be flown by a human pilot or remotely as an aerial drone. Manned flight seems scary since the drone's four swirling propellers, which aren't encased in protective shields, seem to be located too close to the pilot's legs.

The Scorpion-3 in the video is only a prototype but it did fly high, but not that long. The video of Scorpion-3 in flight can be viewed here.

Hoversurf describes Scorpion-3 as a "human carrying drone" that will spark a "Revolution in Human Mobility." It's also comparing the Scorpion-3 to the speeder bikes flown by Imperial Storm Troopers in the Star Wars episode, Return of the Jedi.

It said Scorpion-3 (S-3) is a multiple use platform that can be used as a hoverbike; a drone-car; a drone-taxi and cargo-drone, among other uses .

Hoversurf said Scorpion-3 was designed for extreme conditions and employs in-house custom software for full manual and automated control. It said it dedicated a lot of resources and R&D to build a flying machine that resembles a compact dirt bike.

Scorpion's design was inspired by heavy-duty sport-utility motorbike frames. The concept was combined with flight qualities providing speed and maneuvering.

Scorpion-3 basically surfs through the air by changing altitude and direction. It's equipped with a safety system powered by state of the art flight controllers; special programming and passive elements along with computer aided speed and altitude limitations.
