Pizza hut is now offering a lower calorie pizza called "Skinny Slice" which has 30 percent less calorie content than its regular pizza counterpart.

The pizza giant is testing two variants of low-calorie pizzas, now being offered in 47 restaurants across Florida and Ohio.

The Skinny Slice is technically not a new pizza recipe from the restaurant because it's made from the same ingredients as the regular pizza.

What separates the low-calorie pizza from the regular is that it has a thinner crust and has lesser cheese and toppings, giving it about 210 calories versus the regular pizza with 290.

According to Pizza Hut Spokesman Doug Terfehr, eating the Skinny Pizza calorie-wise is like eating a medium sized pizza, "but now on a large."

In addition, Terfehr said that the company's aim is to produce a product that will be appealing to customers, but at the same time retains what the customers loved about the company.

However, there are some who doubt that the Skinny Slice will be a hit.

According to PMQ Pizza Magazine publisher Steve Green, "diet pizza is an oxymoron."

Green added that there have been several companies who did the same thing as Pizza Hut, but were not successful.

Skinny Slice is not the company's first attempt at introducing a thinner and healthier product.

In 2008, the company launched its Fit n' Delicious pizza that is still in the company's menu today.

But the thin crust pizza was not a hit with the customers, according to Terfehr.

He added that if the Skinny Slice testing becomes successful, it will replace Fit n' Delicious in their menu.

Meanwhile, the new low-calorie offering, which was launched three days ago, has not received much media coverage, although it has got the attention of some social media enthusiasts.

The new product is priced at about US$11, same as the price of the regular pizza.
