Two schools in Hangzhou and Guangdong have a new roaming visitor: an arctic fox.

Images and videos of a fox with snow white fur uploaded to Sina Weibo showed the animal walking near Hangzhou Xiaoshan No 11 High School, and another one at the Guangdong University of Finance and Economics in Sanshui.

"The animal's head was not very big, around the size of a dog's, and it had a narrow snout and long bushy tail," said Xuan, a physical education teacher at Hangzhou who first saw the animal on the school field during the weekend.

"I walked over slowly. It didn't run away, it just made a sound. It was staring at me intensely," he added. But when several people tried to approach it, the fox ran away. Li Hang, the high school's director, said that they are used to stray cats and dogs on their school, but not a fox.

A more friendly white fox was also seen at Guangzhou University. It even played with students and nuzzled a plastic water bottle.

Netizens noticed that the foxes looked tired, fearful, and injured. A zoo official said that the foxes looked like a pure-bred Arctic fox, which is a rare sight in China as these animals usually live in polar regions. What's also worrying is that baby foxes are usually bought as pets, and discarded when they are grown due to difficulties in maintenance.
