Another superhero finds a home on the small screen.

CBS has just managed to get the rights to adapt DC Comics' "Supergirl" to the small screen, shelling out a hefty amount to commit to producing the series.

The series will be an hour-long, and will center around Kara Zor-El, Superman's female cousin, who was also born on Krypton. She manages to escape before the destruction of their planet and has been hiding out on Earth and keeping her powers secret, much like her superhero cousin. However, when she turns 24 years old, she decides to embrace her identity and her powers and be the superhero she was born to be.

Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, the pair who will be penning and producing the TV adaptation of Supergirl, had also previously teamed up to create the superhero drama "No Ordinary Family" for ABC. The production will be handled by Berlanti Productions. Sarah Schecter will also serve as executive producer.

The character of Supergirl was once portrayed by actress Laura Vandervoort on The CW's Superman prequel "Smallville".

With Supergirl being picked up by CBS, all five major networks could possibly be having superhero-themed shows airing next season. Four of the five have their origins with DC Comics.

Fox will be airing the highly-anticipated prequel to "Batman" entitled "Gotham" which also began with a series commitment.

NBC has Hellblazer take Constantine scheduled for airing this October, CW has Flash and Arrow, while ABC has Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and spin-off Agent Carter.

Netflix has also joined the superhero bandwagon, airing four Marvel series and a mini, beginning with Daredevil.

Currently, superhero movies and comic-themed flicks continue to dominate the box office. Technology has also given new life to old stories and characters.

Producers refer to comic adaptations as "fall's biggest bet".
