Fake Ad Leads iPhone Users to Microwave their Handsets

In the past, pranksters have tried suggesting that iOS7, an upgrade to the operating system on Apple's mobile devices, could make smart devices waterproof.

The new prank, in which an iOS8 exclusive feature "Wave" is advertised, led some iPhone users to microwave their iPhones to wirelessly charge the devices.

The online pranksters have assembled an official-looking product page that describes Apple Wave, a game-changing process that is allegedly part of the upgrade to the iOS8 operating system, said Digital Trends.

"Wave is our latest and greatest addition to iOS 8," said the faked ad. "Wave-charge your device by placing it within a household microwave for a minute and a half."

Images of the false feature have surfaced in social media sites, including Imgur, where some gullible iPhone owners even posted the aftermath of microwaving their devices.

"iOS 8 contains new drivers that interface with your device's radio-baseband allowing it to synchronize with microwave frequencies and use them to recharge your battery," the advert added.

Although the false ad states that one should not "wave-charge" the devices for longer than 300 seconds, microwaving the device for any time would destroy it completely.

While the wireless charging of iPhone devices running on iOS 8 is a hoax, Intel has unveiled its wireless "charging bowl" that company's chief executive officer Brian Krzanich said will hit stores "around the end of this year."

Announced earlier in January, the charging bowl was among the few ideas the CEO introduced at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Krzanich said the idea of the bowl received the most interest since the tech show, with members of the public continuously contacting Intel through emails to ask when the device will be released.

During his speech, the head of Intel reaffirmed the contraption will be launched by the year's holiday season, although Krzanich didn't disclose the price of the device.
