The Google Android 5.0 L release date could just be around the corner if the company sticks to its typical timeline. The first devices to receive it were the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and maybe the Nexus 8 and Nexus 6 will debut with it.

Google has reportedly changed how new Android updates are released. Google normally releases two major updates in a year: one comes in the summer while the other in middle or late fall, usually during Halloween. Google has reportedly changed its approach in a way reminiscent of Apple iOS announcements.

Apple typically announces new iOS updates at WWDC in the summer and makes a Beta version available for developers.

Google announced Android L at Google I/O in the summer and released a Developer Preview for the Nexus 7 2013 and Nexus 5 for some testing. The final version will be rolled out in the fall when the new Nexus devices will be announced.

The Android L OS is supposedly Google's biggest leap since Gingerbread switched to Ice Cream Sandwich.

One of the Android L's prominent features is Material Design for a more uniform platform and UI design. People can expect a more colorful interface, fluid animations, 3D effects, shadows and a more intuitive interface.

It will have 64-bit support, ART, status bar and lock screen improvements.

Google employees that posted on a Chromium.org thread said they've been running the new Android L on the Nexus 4. One post said that with the Nexus 4 on Android L, images could be opened in the native Android Apps (Galary/Google+ Photos) which employs the native WebP support in Android.

The Android L OS was called "LRW52G."
