Miss America's Classmates Claim Hazing in Sororities Was 'Intense'

During an interview with Good Morning America Tuesday, Miss America Kira Kazantsev confirmed that she was ousted from her sorority at Hofstra University but said that it was due to an e-mail she sent and not a hazing scandal.

Kazanstev did say she participated in hazing, but alleges that the only activities she forced on pledges was to make them recite information about the sorority and give them a taste of what life in the sorority was like.

The beauty queen also claims that the e-mail which got her kicked out of the Greek club was about an evening of scaring the pledges which leaders took the wrong way, causing her to be ousted.

However, two of those who attended the same university as this year's Miss America did say that the hazing in the sororities at Hofstra is actually intense and aggressive.

A classmate of Kazanstev who was not identified said that she and Miss America had the same circle of friends but she believes the story that the pageant winner stated. The 24-year-old who had the same classes with Kazanstev said that Miss America was a very respectable woman and that she was a really nice person.

However, she did say that she heard rumors about harsh hazing practices being done in the sororities at the university, but could not recall if Kazanstev's name was ever linked to such activities.

Another Hofstra student, who graduated in 2010 but attended at the same time Kazanstev was enrolled at the university, offered detailed information about the supposed hazings.

The young woman claimed that although she did not pledge, she was interested in the sorority rush while at the university. She cited specifically Alpha Phi, which is the sorority that Kazanstev took part in, saying that it had a mixed reputation, with some pledges saying hazing did not happen within the sorority while others claimed they faced aggressive hazing.

In some cases, the graduate noted, hazing was carried out through mental abuse while other times it was physical.

She also added that other sororities had the custom of "branding" their pledges by heating up a fork then placing it on the pledge's skin so it would leave a scar.

Although the unnamed woman did not personally know Kazanstev, she stated that Miss America's statement about only carrying out 'light' hazing may not be completely true as getting kicked out of a sorority is generally based on solid and serious grounds.

Due to a privacy policy implemented at Hofstra University, Alpha Phi refused to comment on the topic.
